Set on Africa’s Mediterranean coast, Tunis is a fascinating city with a French history and Islamic culture. Its old quarter, the medina, is a maze of winding streets and narrow alleyways bustling with people buying and selling local goods. The city’s souk overflows with essential oils and colourful spices, while the large stone arch, known as the Bab El Bahr (or Porte de France), is one of the old town’s most famous landmarks.

For a different shopping experience, head to Avenue Habib Bourguiba – a large avenue with a number of cafes and retailers that stretches from the clock tower to the Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul.

Delve into local culture and history at the Zitouna Mosque – the largest in Tunisia. This is one of the city’s most important sights, dating back to the 8th century. Also, don’t miss the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Carthage – the ruins of a 9th century settlement on the eastern edge of Lake Tunis. The Bardo National Museum is another must-see.
