Things to do in Liege

Liege is on the River Meuse in the French-speaking Wallonia region of Belgium. The city has a medieval centre with plenty to explore including the Cathedral de Liege and the citadel. While you are there, climb the 374 steps of the Montagne de Beuren for a great view of the city and kick back in the pretty Parc de la Boverie.

Recommended day trips from Liege

Liege is in the east of Belgium so you’ll have to head west to explore some of the country’s much-loved destinations including Mons, Bruges and Ghent. The medieval city of Maastrict, just over the border in the Netherlands is well worth a visit for its architecture and arts and cultural scene. If you want to travel further afield, our experts have compiled a guide to the best road trips in Germany.

Is it worth hiring a car in Liege?

Exploring the Wallonia region of Belgium with its medieval towns and Renaissance-architecture and proximity to the mountains and forests of the Ardennes is pure pleasure by car but also essential in rural areas without a comprehensive transport network. You can visit major cities like Brussels and Antwerp by train but will miss out on many gems without a car. The road network in this part of Belgium is good with few tolls on the autoroutes.
