Plan your journey from Nuremburg Airport

From Nuremburg Airport, you’re just a 20-minute drive from Nuremburg city, where many historic, cultural and gastronomic attractions await. The Old Town is a good place to start your tour, with highlights including the original city walls and distinctive timber-framed houses.

The Imperial Castle is one of Nuremburg’s top attractions. Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the city, this enormous fortification dates back to the Holy Roman Empire. Be sure to check out the Deep Well and Sinwell Tower while you’re here.

Frequent renters get upgraded – and additional days for free – by signing up for Avis Preferred loyalty benefits. Simply choose a date and time and we’ll prepare your quality hire car.

Museum lovers are spoilt with a wide and eclectic choice catering for all tastes. If you have children to entertain, don’t miss the Spielzeugmuseum featuring a wonderful collection of toys from across the ages.

There’s also plenty for art lovers with the Neues Museum, home to an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures from 1945 to the present day.

If you’re after a souvenir of your trip, head to Craftsmen’s Courtyard (Handwerkerhof), located just behind the city walls. Here you’ll see the city’s craft’s people (including stained glass painters, doll-makers and silversmiths) at work.

In the evening, take your pick from the city’s vast selection of fine restaurants and bars. Trying a delicious Nuremberg bratwurst (preferably in a traditional bratwurst kitchen) is an absolute must.

From the comfort of your rental car, Nuremberg is waiting to be discovered – Bavarian style.

Beyond Nuremburg Airport

Bavaria is a beautiful state in southeast Germany offering a diverse range of attractions – from mountains and forests, to historic cities and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Whether you’re after outdoor pursuits or cultural attractions, there’s a wealth of things to see and do.

Bamberg

Around a 45-minute drive from Nuremberg Airport (via the A73) is Bamberg. The city’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a glimpse into ancient Germany with its charming houses and historic landmarks. There are also a number of trendy shops, restaurants and the impressive Bamberg Cathedral to explore. Other highlights include the Brückenrathaus (“Town hall on the bridge”), a rose garden with spectacular views of the old town, plus the fisherman’s village – known as Little Venice.

Munich

Make sure you leave a day or two to visit Munich, Bavaria’s beautiful capital city. Just under a two-hour drive from Nuremberg Airport (via the A9), this pretty city offers superior dining, entertainment and sightseeing. Head to Marienplatz (the central square), where the glockenspiel draws in large crowds keen to watch its daily re-enactment of two 16th century stories. Don’t miss the Marian Column – a famous landmark with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary placed at the top.

Erlangen

Just a few kilometres north of Nuremberg is the historic town of Erlangen. Its most famous building is the Schloss Erlangen – built in 1704 and used as a university since 1825. Its features include the beautiful botanic gardens and orangery. The City Museum (housed in the building that was once the town hall) is also worth a look, charting the history of Erlangen through the ages.

Hire a car and explore the delights of Nuremberg and Bavaria at your own pace. All you have to do is drive and discover.
