Stockholm Arlanda Airport is located about 45 km north of Stockholm Central Station and the city is reached via the E4 motorway.
Stockholm offers an incredible variety of attractions where there is something for everyone. This atmospheric city is glorious at all times of year, in spring or mid-summer when the city is green and the waterways are at their best, or in the deep winter, when snow is on the ground and the twinkling lights of the Christmas markets beckon. We can also recommend taking a boat trip out into the Stockholm archipelago. A nice break from city life where you can experience these tiny islands up close.
There is so much to explore in Stockholm itself that the capital can easily occupy you for several days, but there is also so much to enjoy outside the city. Take a trip to Birch Island and Birka, one of Sweden’s oldest towns dating back to the Viking times, go hiking on Sörmlandsleden, the longest hiking trail in Sweden or in summer head for the beach on Gotland Island, 1.5hrs south of Stockholm. If you are planning a trip, check out our guide to inspirational road trips from Stockholm.
There is a great public transport system in Stockholm that is both reliable and good value, but to experience the best that the Stockholm region has to offer and travel more widely in Sweden, hiring a car is your best option.
Sweden is a great country to drive in with a good road network that is well maintained. In many areas you will see little traffic. However, weather conditions can change, and it is sensible to check the forecast before travelling in the winter months when some roads can be closed. If you have not driven in Sweden previously you should familiarise yourself with our guide to road rules in Sweden. In Sweden as in the rest of Europe you will be driving on the right-hand side of the road and seat belts are mandatory for all car occupants.
Choose from park and ride facilities on the edge of the city, parking garages which are plentiful in districts like Norrmalm or on-street parking but check signs as fines for parking incorrectly can be high. Check our guide to tips on driving in Stockholm for more information.
